do you have some more details ? (error messages etc)
could help solving the prob

how about "demos need card less ancient than voodoo3" ? :)

kb_: seems that po0h was able to run demos with his VooDoo3 card with the previus windows versions... and except that, your comment doesn't help.

po0h: WinXP doesn't support voodoo cards. I think that i've found somewhere a 3dfx-related site with 3rd party drivers for Windows XP... but i can't remember the URL. Search at google and you'll found them, since they're very popular.

how about you be smart and reinstall win98 SE instead?

(/me hates winXP with a vengeance - no offense against you, XP does look pretty attractive)
Most demos work fine on Win XP on my computer... Though if I had the choice, I'd be running some other operating system.

which one would you be running then?

The only error message I've got is "dx error" when I was trying to run "das product". when I've tried to run vip 2 then the computer just hangs up with some colored lines on the screen. I've heard that direct x is not pre version compitable so when I'm running dx 8.1 I cant run demos programmed with 8.0 and so on, can that be the problem?
I've got the 3rd party drivers... winxp had some voodoo3 drivers on the cd but it didn't suport tv-out so I changed.

DirectX is backwards compatible, all the way back to 3.0, I believe.

You might want to switch back to the M$ provided drivers - what do you need TV-out for?
dont think that xp has a reasonable voodoo driver support.
got the same prob with my ruling voodoo graphics some
time ago... with my GF2 all demos work except the
ones with weird gfx modes or 8bit. why? who cares :-)
linux rules, so i just say thisto all coders outthere:
WRITE YOUR DEMOS FOR LINUX OR ANOTHER *cool* OS, WINTENDO
SUCKS ME DOWN... peace

everyone owning a voodoo card should be prepared for heavy problems...not only with drivers
btw, I don't believe linux is da OS for demos (yet). I have linux installed, and it's nice to work with it etc., but demos ?
we tried to make linux demos running during a school project, but usually it doesn't work without post-installing or downloading thousands of additional libraries and packages.
or maybe I'm just lame :)
we had such discussions already too often, everyone should make demos for platforms that please him.

Hmm... dunno. I'm running Win95 on my other box and it works just fine but is missing some things, so I'd probably choose Win98 to still be able to run DOS programs.

Btw, I've had XP bluescreen from at least three intros or demos.

Welcome to the stinkin world of dominance, cash flow and market share. Nvidia has abandoned voodoo support completely and wants *you* to buy new nvidia cards. You can pay the price and buy a cheap nvidia or ati card (matrox sucks at 3d, rules at 2d) OR you can go the hard way, reading countless forums, testing various hacked drivers by people with the same problems as you. The choice is yours. I wont even give you my opinion because I am sure I am going to be flamed one way or the other :-)

If you are happy with Win98, stick with them. They'll give you the best voodoo support you can get. However, I have to remind you that Win98 is unstable, its networking is a joke, its filesystem is at least scary etc, etc. In Win2K/XP, if you crash, it's a hardware/driver problem for sure. In general, good hardware will almost certainly give you alot less headaches.

Hope that helps :-)

So my previous argument was perfectly valid. As good as any driver can get, FR08 and VIP2 just won't run on V3 cards. And if they do (because the drivers fake all capabilities the v3 just doesn't have), they'll look like about 10% of what was intended.

Voodoo cards (V1-3 and in parts V4/5) just can't do the following things:
- color depths greater than 16bpp
- textures greater than 256x256
- non-square textures
- render-to-texture
- most advanced DX blend modes
- full alpha blending support

plus the one or the other less used feature. There are certain issues with wireframe graphics et al.

And for the "your answer doesn't help" command - tell me anything else than buying a new/better card that DOES help. Except maybe stopping wasting your time on demos and getting back to 1997 DOS games.

kb_: maybe a comment with some information on where to find better drivers made by other people which works under XP? He didn't said that the demos wasn't working under Win98, so you can easylly suppose that this isn't VooDoo's problem. In this case, it's better to help him find better drivers than making him to waste his money...

Except if there was problems with demos with the current video card. If so then i agree with kb_ that a new card have to be buyed if you want to watch new demos.

If kb_ (or anyone else) says here that if he (po0h) doesn't have now problems with the card, he'll have in future... then i'll answer that this doesn't make sense since even GeForce4 in future will have problems with demos that will be released 2 years after. And except that, he (po0h) doesn't seem to have problems right now? Why waste his money?

Anyway, neither kb_ or anyone else said that (and i don't think that he'll say it since i've already answerred), so why to bother?

then who don't _you_ find him the drivers?

besides, a v3 won't get you far when it comes to demos and games nowdays, i strongly suggest you (pooh) save up some cash for atleast a cheap gf2 for the time being

ps. gf4mx is the sucks :)

with the abone post i didn't meant that everyone has to find him drivers... personally i'm too lazy to do that. I just mean that instead of flaming, it's better to try find him the drivers.

I also agree that it's by FAR a better solution to buy a new video card. But what if po0h doesn't have enough money (even this small amount... maybe he has other priorities) for a new card? Has he to be flamed for that?

*sigh*
let me straighten this out

SHUT THE FUCK UP
accept kb's statements on this. they're true.

oh and cut the stupid driver story.
people who repeat themselves too often irritate me.

Plek: rather strong words, but it's true.

Either roll back to a previous OS with decent Voodoo3 drivers or buy a new graphics card. Stop fussing about it people.

I'm planing to buy a new system after some sommer vacation work.. so I'm not into to buy a new graphics card untill then... I just thougt that maybe it just was a software problem that could be fixed on the v3 card in the waiting for a new system..

superplek: if you have to do with people which are so stupid and they can't understand something so simple, you have to repeat yourself sometimes...
