what do you think about remixes?

category: general [glöplog]
i noticed a feeling about remixes while listening to some new music yesterday.
when i know the original track i almost never like the remixes no matter how good they are in technical aspects. the music just feels wrong. the remixes that i really enjoy are those where i did not know the original track before listening for the first time.
there are not that many remixed demos, but i feel similar about them.

discuss?

i'm a huuuuuge fan of remixes - it more often than not adds versatility to the original track, and it just shows how varied music can be.

i especially love remixes that are totally out there, e.g. Noisia's remix of Fade to Gray, or to take a recent example, SynSUN's remix of The Prodigy - Omen

ok, maybe SynSUN's Omen remix isnt THAT weird, but then there's e.g. Katy Perry - I Kissed A Girl (Tatanka Rmx)

Tepr - Minuit Jacuzzi (datA Remix)

And demo-wise. Lucy in the Sky with Deities is a gazillion times better than Deities.

Close thread.

sometimes remixes/edits are better than the original, sometimes they aren't! HOLY SCHEISSE
I think making a good remix (not a "generic crap") is a really hard work (at least as difficult than making a good track).
Because you have to bring some originality (not repeating the original track), showing a different side of the track, while keeping the original "spirit" of the track.

So, I think a remix can be "as good as" the original but most of the time, it's just not the case.

uncle-x i think it was what we call "irony". the track he pointed out doesnt seem any different from the original one, or, wait. at least for the 15 first seconds of it. i admit i can't listen to it for more than 15 seconds. ;s

btw, as for remixes, i'm a big fan of this one:

remixes can be quite nice, but most of the times I'm always very biased and like the version I heard first more.
Most of the time I prefer new interpretations instead of remixes. Although I admit the work that is put into a good remix, for me it's quite often just an added bassline and some punchy rythm.

If I think of it again, than reinterpretations are mostly common in jazz while every other genre calls it remix. I honestly don't know the point through wich I should draw the line between them both.
