Thanks to everyone who posted, I've enjoyed this thread. megazoom's post hit the nail on the head. Man is an irrational animal, nothing will make that go away. Perfect society won't come about by removing religion or other types of irrationality. Many of Dostoevsky's novels explored these questions.
"the god delusion" is a nice read.

You can see the gradual dehumanisation of us all today in our changing culture (thanks to people like Dawkins and extremist athiests) and it's going to get worse.

No, you can see a recent trend towards totalitarianism brought about by people starting to take their rights for granted, which is exactly what you're doing. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance" and similar phrases have been repeated so many times over that people forget the meaning behind the words. See, most of the rights you're so afraid of losing to rationalism our recent forefathers paid for in blood fighting against faith-based institutions. These include theocracies, religiously imposed governments (Nazis, communists, etc.) and otherwise liberal but still not completely secular governments (lingering blasphemy laws, religious views on sex, tax-funded churches, etc.).

Dawkins is a secular humanist, and he's also a scientist so he has an analytical and rational perspective on most things, but where exactly is the problem in that? Oooh, demystifying biology. Oooh. I do get it, though. You recognise that you're just a squishy machine, and if studying nature reveals that there's no hidden magical component somewhere, you must be as worthless as any other machine. But that's how YOU see yourself. What Dawkins' example could show you is that you don't need to be afraid, and that you can still live a spiritually rich life while accepting the humble truth about what you are.

Ok, so seeing as how the world is "gradually being dehumanised", when was it most humanised, then? Before Einstein? Before Darwin? Before Copernicus? Just how much irrationality would you want? Would being ritually sacrificed to appease the weather gods feel spiritual to you? Having your skin torn off because someone accused you of swearing? What exactly is so great about this irrational past you'd want us all to revert to?

exactly, which is why you read one of his reasonable books like 'the blind watchmaker' and come to your own conclusions
there is no such thing as a stupid book. but, some books belong in the non-fiction category and others belong in the entertainment category. you pull ideas from the entertainment category and you mess with those ideas until they deserve to be in the non-fiction category. err i'm jk. just some shit i made up in about 2 seconds. ;x i wanted to post something. have a nice day people.

I viewed this yesterday and I found it hilarious. That guy is awesome. Ok, for some maybe it looks like he tries to trap people with his questions, jump in their talk to prove his point or something (and many of the interviews where sneaky, he used another name and told them it's an interview about a spiritual documentary or something without them knowing) but I don't care. Maybe someone will but it was funny as hell.
