question regarding endless image zoom in

Hey guys, being an artist I am totally baffled on how seamless image zooms are done where an image zooms into another, and another, and another, creating the illusion of endless depth. Is this a code thing or a good graphician thing?
The trick is to seamlessly blend several images together while zooming them one after one to more detail, this is mostly a graphician thing since it takes some real talent to make good looking zooms. Though I guess the coders shouldn't go entirely uncredited, especially not when it comes to demos like Magia by TBL on Amiga, that's one impressive endless zoom.

Yah I think I was thinking Magia but lots of other demos have done it. So... maybe the trick of today is to count of PNG support? Much respect to people who pull off this effect flawlessly.

Also, I think Cadence and Cascade by ASD has a similar effect (with a nice transition btw), but I am not entirely sure and it's rather difficult for me to check it right now...

The fun thing about Contour was that is was so buggy and GPU hungry that most people back then experienced the demo in a crawling state. If you *really* looked for it, the 'trick' of the zoomer was as exposed as a nudist colony :)

All the so-called endless/infinite zoomers i've seen in demos have all ended and have all been finite.

gizmo: i don't think he invented this effect; it appeared in films/tv probably many years before...
(and the same applies to most demo effects)

Also, in the demo Jumpy by Digital Murder there was a jumpy one :)

Looked cool then, however I mostly manage to see this exactly part with wrong color pallete. Why?

One was also appeared in Perfect Circle. My favorite however is probably in Magia. Perhaps because it later does other things like rotating the screen 90 degrees, changing direction. This is almost like the effect I called "Atlantis effect" because I had first seen it in the game Atlantis (The world on a sphere or cube and rotating inside. Something like the landscape on Spot demo by Exceed after the infinite zoomer). I like the way that with some bitmaps and zoom/rotate people can produce pseudo-3d screens. I also remember a shoot'em up on GBA (pseudo 3D shoot'em up coded by some sceners, one scener posted some news about it somewhere around once) where you had the feeling that you were inside a 3d projected tunnel, while it must be some scales or something. Are the old 8bit/16bit demos be using these to produce something almost like a freedirectional tunnel?

p.s. Also,. fractal zoomers (like on Crystal Dream 2) could also be considered in one way infinite croszoomers too, in terms of algorithms, nah..

Btw,. I have heard that the infinite fractal zoomer was done very good in an Amiga demo just before CD2. In which?

Also, the coolest fractal zoomer that I had seen on a C64 has produced is in the demo Attack of the Stubidos part 3.

Also,. I could never manage to see Contour in modern computers. I think it needed a Voodoo then..

I just watched it a short while back on my P4 2.8Ghz wiht a GeForce4 Ti card and also on a GeForce FX card!!

Works great and definitely _smooth_ !! ;-))

For the topic here:
The first _picture_ infinite zoomer I've seen was definitely in contour I'd say...
One of the first and really great fractal zoomers was the one from CD2 by Triton...
Of course there have been similar effects before in other demos and even on other machines (c64, amiga etc...) but when it comes to the _perfection_ of this kinda effect I'd say that CD2 (in fractal) and Countour (in pictures) where really one of the most impressive ones back then... :-)

I think there was a fractal based one in Alpha Omega by PMC, and a cool "Intel Outside" one in Beyond Belief by Noxious.

But my favourite is Contour too as it flows so perfectly, it rotates, is timed to the music and leads to a great still by Saffron at the end. But then the one in Captured Dreams is just as good and even zooms back out into a little flyby scene.

Personally, I found the one in Magia quite poor. The pictures weren't blended into each other if i remember, they just appeared over the top.

when was contour released? i'm pretty sure captured dreams came out earlier (the gathering 1997 (easter-time)).

wade: i have to agree that the infinityzoomer in contour looks better since it consists of not only better pictures, but more motion and seems more "thought through" than the one in captured dreams.

..though; i applauded like a little child on steroids when i first saw CD on the big screen, hehe. :)

contour's is the most 'appealing' infinite zoomer i've had the chance to be, but that's just because of saffron's gfx... technically, it is far from being the best... you can clearly see the alphablending when images keep zooming and it's far from being a perfect zoomer... when I watch countour (although I haven't watched it recently), at the end of that zoomer, I keep thinking if the picture keeps rotating or it's just me... I still don't know the answer (and really never cared to figure it out, it'd be as easy as taking two snapshots and compare), but the effect is just great... be it eye-produced, or be it real rotation :)

i´m not sure if it really was the first ever, but the first (and only) infinite zoom i made was in "the gate" by artwork, which was released at symposium 1996.
and we called it "infite zoom" (or endless zoom?) because it ended with the same picture it began with.
