On another note, this would equal getting Jeff Minter to the 4th Alt Party in 2003! Way to go guys!

Rumours have been doing the rounds for months, but now I can finally confirm that yes, the talk has been true. One of the largest pioneers of industrial and electronic music, Front 242, is to appear live at the next Alternative Party, fulfilling a dream that we have had for many years.
Starting with their first recordings in 1981 Front 242 brought a whole new harsh, meaty and beaty approach to electronic music with many hit tracks such as Tragedy For You, Religion and the all-time #1 club hit, Headhunter.

Front 242 has a big impact on scene music, influencing many musicians along the years. The most obvious examples on the ST are the demos 'Punish Your Machine' (takes its name from one of their tracks) and the famous 'Grotesque' by Omega, which remixed a 242 track and used a
lot of their visuals.

Interestingly enough 242 has not been aware of the demoscene, even though their live visuals are full of demo style effects. This will, however, be the first time that they will experience the heated competition, visuals and buzz that are prevalent at parties. Yes, they are going to be staying for the whole party to watch the compos as well as playing their full live set on Friday, so demo crews better release some hot material! They will also be giving a speech on music and art on Saturday.

This is the 10th anniversary of the Alternative Party and we have reserved the biggest, coolest hall we could find. Two floors, industrial architecture (an old Nokia cable factory), lounges, seminars, prizes and of course 242 and other special guests. The theme of the party is to look back at the dawn of the computing age, when Charles Babbage was designing his first steam-powered computer systems, with the help of the world's first programmer, Lady Ada.

We have been working months to finalise this deal and I can honestly say there's never been such a big band playing at a demo party before. It is going to kick rear ends like nothing has done before.

The party starts on October 24th and continues to the 26th.

yups, going there for sure! havoc: and how about visiting some swedes while we're on the road? :)

earx, i'm down with the idea, but a lot depends on being able to get days off from work, as usual... if we go by car, it'll take a week extra or so ;0 maybe flying turns out to be more practical, if not, i say we do indeed stop in sweden for some beers with the big boys ;0

CiH: That's a Swedish demo :)

Earx/Havoc: If you go by car, make sure to take the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki, or you will need that week of driving as Havoc suggested :)

havoc: check helsinki flights by Berlin air or blue1, they're both fairly cheap (especially if you fly from germany as our mental .gov introduced ecotaxes :P)

evil: true, seems like driving thru north .se/.fi is not a real option.
but ehm. is the ferry from stockholm to turku maybe an even a faster option? :)

havoc: hope you can get time off. so far, this is my only real vacation this year =) i'm looking for at least one passenger in the car. otherwise the trip is not so economical. we can maybe ask dforce as well?

earx, cheaper but about equally fast, afaik. finns prefer the boat from helsinki because it lasts longer, i.e. more tax free drinking.

It's about 2 hour drive from Turku to Helsinki, so it's probably faster (and at least easier) to take the ferry straight to Helsinki.

earx, corsas are fine cars but elks and icebears up north are bigger, so i agree the ferry is a better option. going straight to helsinki instead of turku would mean we can leave the car in stockholm, which i guess is cheaper but also slower. then again, it would be cool to join the swedes' ferry trip, imho...
added on the 2008-07-21 16:42:51 by havoc havoc
Leaving the car in stockholm isn't a bad idea. The night ferry from stockholm to helsinki will be more expensive than the morning ferry from stockholm to turku, though, but without the need to pay for the car you'll end up having more money for the tax free booze :-)

it also makes the ferry trip a lot better if you dont have to worry about being in the driving condition in the morning. :)
