new generation about oldskool games

category: general [glöplog]
My understanding is this article was completely fabricated as a "joke."
funny. one thing is sure about oldies. the gameplay and the fun are far better than in nowadays games especially the ones on PC which are supposed to be adult-oriented and often so boring.
Sure nostalgia counts.

the thing we forget (as with everything) is that there was plenty of crap around in the 'old days', just as there is today.
It's just that today's crap costs so much more.

Super Sprint rules!!!
omg, these kids dont know tetris?! i'm by no means oldschool, and perhaps just 10 years older than those kids, but EVERYONE is supposed to know at least tetris. especially since it was the standard game sold with every gameboy.

hm yeah, i forgot, nowadays kids get GBAs for present, so it might have other games as starter kits...=)

how come the kids new about ET cartridges being buried in the desert but they didn't know anything about tetris?

yeah, quotes like that made the article seem fabricated

BTW: Most GBA games are pretty much oldschool gaming AFAIK, so yay to the kids for enjoying Metal Slug, Wario Ware and Zelda for instance in glorious pixelled 2D !!
Sad persons, those kids I mean. All they want to do in videogames is kill, kill and... did I say kill already? Oh, and of course everything has to blow up, right?

Gargaj:

It's like if you'd say, for example, that a veteran car is a piece of shit. The guy who fabricated this lame article is a narrow-minded, childish asshole.

The article seems to be rather subjective. Being brought up in 80, I like those games, which is obvious (well maybe not ET cause I am scared to play after waching some screenshots). But hey, there were more platforms! Not only consoles and arcade ones!! What about some Knight Lore, Sorcery, Ghosts'n'Goblins, Draconus (kill!), Armalyte (destroy!), or Price of Majic (think...the most difficult), Last Ninja, and many, many more. Those kids are poor and their parents should buy them more intelectual games than 'Xplosive' ones.
BTW. I do not feel like an old geek unlike those kids will certainly do at my age =).

Oldschool games rule :) Especially many old arcade games, c64/amiga games are still enjoyable now. And not just to those old enough to remember them either - I recently lent a 'mame' cd (arcade emulator with tons of old games) to a friend, and his kids loved it (they're around 10, and are used to pc and ps2 games).

Optimus: doom sucks, get duke nukem 3d :)

I have Duke Nukem3d too in my HD too, yeah it's better in some aspects :)

But Doom gives me the creeps when playing it dark, with my headphones and freely without having my parents breaking my balls about that :)

P.S. Yes,. I've noticed that when I have so much time in front of me, without beeing anxious about anything (my parents mostly), then I enjoy things much better. For example, the first day I got the old PC for my stay here in Karlsruhe, I wanted to test the sound and I only had some Adlib musicdisks. But when I loaded one by Sanction, I was so touched to be free in my room and watching the nice gfx/smooth scroller while listening to such nice tunes! And on fact was that nobody was there to annoy me. Also, I didn't had the anxiety of "if I watch demos today, I won't make it for the deadline, tomorrow I might not be able to work well", because I have enough days in front of me and I don't care. Simply, I watched demos and heared music without having anything to care about! This way, I enjoyed at maximum. At the same way I enjoyed Doom, I had years to enjoy it with a free mind..

Well, yeah I know. That's irrelevant. Btw,. the article is very funny :)

sim: i never get time to play them all :) When i do occasionally get some time for it, it's usually ikari warriors or something similar. Or altered beast :)

Optimus: enjoy it while it lasts. You don't have that kind of free time to enjoy for long :) Actually, those times are great. You can sit down and think 'i have a whole day free, what should i do?' and you don't care what anyone else thinks, just do whatever you want, even playing adlib music disks for a whole day :)

yeah, oldskool rulez. for us, being raised up on 'em... playing arena 3000, elite, captain fizz, and alikes was a real cool feeling, but you can't blame the youngsters for not being able to value them.
they're simply too young, by becoming an old(er) geek, they might become curious enough to find the gameplay behind the blocky (2d) graphics...
anyways, i wouldn't call a person an asshole just because he isn't interested in veteran cars, neither a guy who doesn't like older games. it's a matter of taste, not something to be judged on...
