Handdrawn 4D-animation

category: general [glöplog]

OK, so I am looking for an handdrawn animation in at least 4D (tesseract or even something more complex) from the time before CGI. Does anyone know if some mad scientist made such a film and where I can watch it?

hmf. that's kindof paradoxical though, isnt it?

Ha ha! That reminds me when my linear algebra teacher at univeristy was actually trying to show us how a 4D cone looks like by gesticulating (well I believe he was moving his hands in the air where the edges were supposed to be). No one understood.

Also my former discrete mathematics teacher was able to draw a 4D cube on the blackboard in less than 5 seconds (well it's not that hard actually).

no, but here is something static and in less dimensions: http://www.math.brown.edu/~howison/newbanchoff/publications/images/20sketch.gif

Here's a handdrawn one created after CG. I know you specifically said 'before' CG.. but since we've got a thread now, it'd be nice to get one up here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ18BttCD2M

Here's something different.. a guy who has made some decent "holograms" using a compass and scraps of plexiglass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUy8lELWhJg

thanks for reminding me again why i picked computer science!!

in other words, am i the only one here who never, at all, saw the point in trying to visualise more than three dimensions? i mean, we're threedee, live with it. it's not like you can see anything useful from those diagrams. it's a bit like fractals, but then even uglier.

Well according to the string theory we're 26D. ;) Besides fractals *with good palette* are pretty!

bigcheese, I know this before I started this thread, but thx anyway!

...the hologram guy is weird.

...and 4D is ugly? Fractals are ugly? http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=32549

skrebbel: if you have the time, read Flatland by Edwin Abbott. A fantastic early science fiction book focused on exactly this topic :)

ahyes, i heard of it. should read it indeed :) thanks for the reminder! i'll start just after i finished all the LEXX episodes (thanks doom)

masterm, you are mistaken, fractals with a good palette are *less ugly*!
