DOS Trackers, and a forgotten soundcard.

category: general [glöplog]
Hello...

So, I've been flirting with FastTracker 2, ScreamTracker3, and Impulse Tracker... (And FT2 is the only one I really get at all)

But I have to make mention of something.. I know that people tend prefer either the Sound Blaster/SBPro/SB16/sometimesevenAWE32, and the Gravis Ultrasound (tried hard, but cannot find one anywhere), and I wonder, why is there seemingly no love for the Ensoniq Soundscape? No offense, but it trumps both the GUS and the AWE32 in performance (The GUS's GF1 was heavily based on the OTTO used in the Soundscape, but the GF1 samplerates would gradually drop when more channels were used, whereas the OTTO didn't do that) and I don't understand...

Are there any DOS trackers that support this great soundcard, or is my Soundscape just not loved by the scene?
doesnt impulse tracker support it? was under the impression it did..

because Ensoniq didn't have a John Smith who gave away a dozen cards at any mayor scene-party in the early nineties.

You can also "build your own soundcard", a Covox Speechthing (D/A Converter for LPT1)

Most old tracker supports this plug.

Dear Sirs,
please can you help me to find some Windows Vista 64 bit drivers for my AdLib sound card. I need very much to try and compose good AdLib compatible music for listening to happy joy.

Bestest regards

Soundblasters had this great feature where they, like, worked with fucking everything. Hooray!

bartman: i dont even think win32 supports adlib. its plain unsupported. im not sure about Vista, but it probably wont work since earlier versions of windows dont support it. atleast thats my experience.

I had love for the SB16 back in the dayz, maybe that was because I hadnt not much trouble with it and the drivers. I then got SBAWE64 Gold which was a great card, but didnt get that much better performance than SB16 was my exp. SB16 was one hell of a card.

In my country or my town i dont think SoundScape was that much available for the public to buy. And I have a hunch that SoundScape came much later, and SoundBlaster was so popular and so cheap. Also I dunno if SoundScape was available on the earliest versions of windows because didnt it come in the late dos days?
You don't have a pc speaker?

afair GUS was relatively cheap, and marketed to the gamers and especially sceners. After a bunch of gus-only demos out there, gus was pretty much mandatory if you wanted to be part of the game.. =)

In his defense, he called the SB16 a good card. That definitely means he's joking.

actually, the SB16 had an awesome price/quality ratio back then. i remember that it was a dirt cheap buy with really quite reasonable quality and great software support (hey, how much more "soundblaster compatible" can you get).

Like it mattered back then anyways. A gus and a sb and you where all set.

The GUS was great for tracking until the computers were fast enough to do software mixing. After that, it was just annoying that the samplerate dropped when you started using more channels.

IIRC, there were some specific reasons for GUS being favored in introsl. I think the init-code needed for GUS output was a lot smaller than for SB cards or something. This would probably be the reason for a lot of GUS only 64ks (most full size demos I can remember supported SB playback).

skrebbel: perhaps in the PnP era with the Vibra chipset? Definitely not the mode lthat was around in 1992 - 1995. The only thing that made it stand out was the compatibility you pointed out.

lug00ber: the GUS was altogether easier t code for *and* there was an SDK freely available to boot. This was not the case for the SB.

the gus pnp didn't drop sample rate as channel numbers went over 14.
