DSL in Greece

The first istogramm is average cost of DSL connections at each European country. Greece is at the first row, much higher than the others. And there are a lot of greek question marks just after that. Why? Because in these costs, there is not the ISP costs included. It's the costs we have to pay to the OTE, the Hellenic Telecomunications Organism, who has established a monopoly in Greece. And after that, we will have to pay additional fee's at the ISP. This happens only in Greece as I read in the article. In the foreign countries, only the ISP company is responsible to set you DSN lines and you only pay fee's for that..

The second istogramm is the percentage of the people who own DSL connections at each country. For Greece it is zero. Why? OTE hasn't given DSL to the market yet. I think it's because of technical problems, or problems with the ISPs or I don't remember,. but that's not the point now..

Actually OTE announced the DSLs, with these high costs, but is also not ready technically or not organised yet to give DSL to the people!!!

The big title on the picture says about Greece: "We are the champions!" ;)

Anyways,. we greeks use to complain too much about how lame our country is, each of us is also too pathetic and the only think he does is to complain ;)

We will get our DSL soon. Things will change, especially when other companies come in Greece and break OTE's monopoly. No problems, just sent this image here, mostly just for fun! Somehow I like to bash Greece in here =)

I stayed in Greece for one month last summer, and was suprised how backwards this country is in so many ways. Even the few internet cafeterias were on dealup.

Greece is good for sex on the beach and boozing, nothing else.

scwer telephone companies monopoly. optimus, good luck for greece there, that you will get many companies soon.

i remember 1996-98 in germany, when phreaking was already almost impossible, noone could really afford calling boards that were like more than 200km away, because the german telekom had that monster prices. when the telekom monopol finnaly broke down, it was like LIBERTY! you suddenly could call boards all over the country or even abroad and have lower telephone costs than even before. it was like a feast... too bad the german bbs scene broke down shortly after that...

Shagma: The available net connections in Greece are PSTN and ISDN (up to 128kbps). DSL is still a dream. Of course, you can always buy a corporate leased line with expensive modems and routers with fees that even companies have trouble paying. Right now, most people buy ISDN 64K.

The reason DSL is so expensive and not really available in Greece (according to most people) is of course that OTE (Hellenic Telecommunications Organization) has not sold out its ISDN hardware yet, demand for DSL is relatively low, Internet adoption is rather weak, the Greek population is rather small etc. etc. Also, OTE still has the monopoly on wiring throughout the country. Its competitors that appeared now that the telecom monopoly was broken have only started building their infrastructure and still rely on OTE for most services. Until that period is over, OTE will have the unofficial monopoly. That also includes DSL of course.

knos: Yes, Gallia is France. The word probably comes from the original name 'Gaule' ;-)

Hello there!

I find it incredible interesting.
I am also sorry to hear that Greece has no DSL.
So, further Good Luck!! Well, our comparance to England and USA is also poor. They use broadband (cable TV) for internet. but we have to use low DSL (compared to that speed!) because our Deutsche Telekom (German Telecom) doesn't want to etablish broadband before 2005 even if it is techincal possible.
And most ISP (Except T-Online (from German Telecom) and AOL and 1-2 others) stopped offering flatrate but offering volume depending rates (so over 5 GB you have to pay xxx cents/€).

All the best!
Bye!

adsl feels so.. 80s
added on the 2003-05-15 08:38:14 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
Well, of course there are faster possibilities (so as Stefan said "It feels so... 80s").
Theoratically you can get up to 8 MBit with ADSL (if the phone line and distance is good enough)...
Max here in Germany I have seen is for individuals 3.2 MBit. But only 768 kbit for flatrate.
I hope that broadband thing will get spread much more in recent future!

All the best!
Bye!

DSL is not always THAT fast. A guy from Germany that is here (and he says that he knows about that stuff because he teaches them) says that is possible in some cases (bad lines or big distances, bad weather, etc) that the speed to be under ISDN's... however this is a rare case. Anyway even if the speed is dialup's, it is better than ISDN since you can be all the day connected downloading that big file without paying anything extra

In Greece, if you are really nice to the technician (=give him some extra money) he can try to find a good (=higher quality) line for you to leech from :-)
