There are a quagmire of thoughts in my head, but I think I'll stick to "Goodbye." :(

This is really sad. Crest was an extremely different kind of person, even more so than most of the brain dead coders sitting in their basements hacking all night. But I always got the impression that he was rather happy about it. All in all, really sad. I'll always remember Crest demoshows since he used to have a rather lame computer so watching the kind of demos that ran on his machine was always a bit deja vu'ish.

very sad, although kinda expectable news. the whole issue has a long pre-story. but noone really expected he would do "it" this time.

crest was an institution for the demoscene. as a person, he was extremely hard to get along with. but his dedication to our common cause, expressed through his demoshows, was extraordinary. he travelled much to show demos to people. when he was more-or-less well-doing financially, he gave money to support democompos (like on evoke 2000). in the demoscene, he seemingly found a place in life. but yet, he couldn't overcome his problems even in this environment. major efforts by the german demoscene to help crest financially and morally went into emptyness. yes, we must confess - we gave up on him. and there was propably no way around it.

so, let's try not to remember crest as a weird, not-making-sense, sometimes even annoying fellow he was at times. let's hope he found relief now that noone could give him. let's remember him as a demoscene for life, whose enormous enthusiasm and dedication will shine on for long time after his passing away.

"I'm not certain how much time I may have left, so I'll be brief
I'm sorry if this message only amplifies your grief
But I couldn't bear the burden of never having said goodbye
And the pain you feel, I promise you, will go away with time "

RIP. Hope you like it more wherever you are now.

Crest appeared to me as someone who lives in a sort of inner prison. Apparently all efforts to free him by him and others failed, so now he took the last remaining escape route. Maybe it really was a wise choice, sad though it is.

I'll second this beautiful line by scamp:
Quote:
Crest, rest in peace, and let's hope heaven for you will be a never-ending demoshow to enjoy.

Crest always used to drop me an e-mail when he had uploaded some video captures to scene.org. This one was sent on july 13:

Quote:

I'm uploading a better video of the ASD demo 'Beyond the walls of Eryx' since the available videos on scene.org/intel site aren't really that good. Probably also my last scene activity except the 10 years Evoke show.

I didn't pay much attention to that last sentence, people say that all the time and he kept uploading videos (he even uploaded some stuff after Evoke), but now I read this shocking news I am wondering if he had already taken a decision at that point.

R.I.P. Crest. Most of us didn't really know you that well because you were the kind of guy that always was somewhere around in the background, but still you were always there, and it's sad to see you go.

The last time I saw Crest was in 1999, I think, just before I decided to retire from the scene and focus on my studies and music instead.

He never was a very uncomplicated and down-to-earth person, but what I remember best about him was his admirable dedication to scene related stuff and his unlimited appreciation of nostalgic (pc) demos. Some of you might know that he never really felt comfortable with Windows demos, I think that it hurt him deeply to watch the development the scene underwent in the last ten years, even though it still was his only hideout, his home... As far as I know, he was about the last human being running OS/2 on his main machine. :)

Even though I haven't seen him for ages, it was quite shocking to read about his suicide. I'd hereby like to apologize for sniggering at him and making fun of him several times in the past. After all, he was a nice guy and I'm sure his spirit will carry on. RIP
Goodbye Crest...
