It'd be interesting to work out the probability of coming up with that exact melody given 128 possible note locations over each of the 4 bars, over say 4 base 12 octaves. It'd shut up the ignorant guys who defend Timbaland by saying it's easy for two people to come up with that exact same melody at least. Obviously it wouldn't take current trends in music into account... but those guys probably wouldn't think of that anyway :)

_-_-__: yeah, I got your mail, and I've emailed Janne -- thanks!

chameleon: Hehe, yep. Not that strange though, it is a girls name in the scandinavian countries as well. :)

this story needs to get picked up by newspapers or something.

By the way chameleon.

Your idea, well, sounds good in theory. However to be relevant the analysis should be done among all the pleasing melodies, instead of the full space of all melodies.

The problem being that nobody solved the problem of finding out automatically all the possible 4-bar long pleasing melodies. (and I'm pretty sure it will never be solvable)

smash: I agree wholeheartedly, but for that to happen, the direct sources of the story needs to step up to the plate, as most newspapers and serious news websites refuse to touch things like this with a ten foot pole unless they have credible direct sources.

So; Tempest and grg, now is the time to shine. :)

gargaj: Zing! :)

@ _-_-__ : Well, yes and no. Pleasing melodies is one thing, but you could fairly easily use scales and intervals to account for invalid notes in a certain key.. a lot of softsynths use it to create melodies.. I couldn't say how though, don't know enough about music theory :(

Excellent. Now it's soon time to hit Wikipedia again, or atleast tomorrow -- I just got a mail from one of the guys I tipped off yesterday, and he says the following:

Quote:
Thanks again for the tip. the news will be headline news tomorrow by the way, in a changed version. The traffic we got on the blog one was just too much to not have it put on the front.

Btw, i checked with some people at NME and other magazines to see if they can run it... we'll see.

Let's cross our fingers people. :)
