online version

Tested in Firefox 2, IE 7, Opera 9.
You might need quicktime plugin for sound effects and music.

Sorry, I am no musician. You could have stopped the music by clicking the Music link if you wanted to play longer (perhaps the sfx are better?).

OTOH, do you know any .mid with some relation to breakout that sounds better and is <470 bytes? I treated the .mid with a hex editor to remove all the unnecessary bytes (tempo switches, copyright notes, instruments for channels never used etc) to get it that small... Unfortunately there is no way in Javascript to play music that is not in a file. :(

First 4K JavaScript here.

O9: Nothing happened.
IE6: Hung up.
FF2: Worked. (But without music/sfx because of no quicktime)

One of the biggest problems with this game is that it lacks speed.
First power-up was a bigger peddle. Very useful, considering how slowly the ball is moving. \:
Second powerup was a second ball. Ok, that gave me some hope that the game would end faster. But no, suddenly one ball went straight through the peddle. Not on the edge or something, but right in the middle of it. I don't know if the 2nd ball is supposed to expire after x hits, but I think it's a bad feature anyway.

Kudos for the effort, the game seems well coded, but some things need fixing.

you simply can't play tetri's music on breakout

this is so wrong
WFM in O9 but dog it looks ugly. There surely was room to add some outset border on the bricks or use nice(r) images.

Also forgot to say this: The colors of the blocks make me think of Menthos fruit.

Also drop the h, my mistake.

The effort is quite good, but there's no fun playing this game. Horrible Tetris music and 9 hits to destroy a yellow brick are just too much.
when I see this one, I thought 4k is not a big challange for such a game like this. but after playing it, I saw that it has some nice details. so, here is my thumb.

What?! I spent 20 minutes clearing the level and I get nothing? Seriously though, the game plays nicely but I could afford an 8k or even 16k download for more content.

It's too easy. Make the ball faster and the paddle smaller or something.

Ok, its 4k, its Java Script and it is a playable breakout game. But playing it is no fun at all. As soon as there is an updated version with more fun, better game balancing with faster ball, smaller paddle, much more (and bigger) falling bricks, fewer total hits to finish a level and may be some typical sound effects instead of this questionable non original “soundtrack” I will give a Thump up for sure. … and if removing the “copper bar” would make a laser possible – do it!
Nice, though it crashed my firefox when I tried to turn off the music :)

Well, it kept me entertained during lunch, and I (who sucks at playing games) was able to eat and play simultaneous.. ok

Mad props for getting it ALL, including the index.html, music, and so on in 4k. Most folks would cheat and no one would care cuz it's javascript.

Also it's more Arkanoid than Breakout, which rules more.
great job :)

Cool interpretation in JS (especially in the given size). Nice! (Maybe the Gameplay lacks in Fun because there there are less special effects or unique new ideas).

Only worked in FF and without sound (no quicktime). Looks good, but too incompatible and way to slow for a thumb.

a very good first demo try. worked fine for me.

because I never did like the way most Breakout games only let you have one power-up at once.

The online version runs fine in my FF 2.0.0.4. +Music/SFX. I like the Amiga throwback with the copper bar.
