This IS NOT demo. This entry against the rules of combined demo compo (pure animation forbidden).

Hard drive file is 131MB, readme.txt says two 32MB partitions, not sure which is right... but if the latter, 64MB for this anim and audio is a bit large, yes? 8088 Domination did something similar in 20 MB, and that was unpacked... Is this just a DMA transfer from the IDE hardware to the screen, with the CPU code spending most of its time on the covox replayer?
added on the 2018-09-10 10:43:02 by trixter trixter
There is NO DMA in BK0011M, Everything is the CPU, even not that fast.

Hi, trixter! First of all, I respect your "8088 Domination" a lot, the things you did are very impressive and inspiring! Unfortunately, I forgot to mention you in greetings (with no evil intent), sorry! Also, thank you for your interest in our demo.

Well, FAQ time :)

  1. This computer has no DMA. We have to read all data "manually" from HDD registers, word by word. As well as switch heads, cylinders and sectors on fly.
  2. This computer is very slow, it spends up to 72 CPU cycles to move a number from one memory cell to another. And it runs on 4 MHz only.
  3. Considering these facts, we are not able to simply stream 16 kb of screen data 30 times per second. So we developed a special codec.
  4. We store only difference between frames. Most of time our codec is lossless, but on dynamic scenes we have to drop some words, according to their unimportance. When the bandwidth is not filled by current frame's data, we load a part of the upcoming keyframe. Sometimes we switch screen pages to display a preloaded keyframe.
  5. We switch palettes often, since this computer can only display black + 3 colors (a few awful presets) at time.
  6. Packed size of .hdi file is 45 Mb, that means it filled by zeros mostly. We want to leave some free space that people can use to store their games, demos and other soft. It's HDD image, after all. The pure data size is 53762 Kb. 9662 of it is occupied by music (stereo 8 bit).
  7. Let's calculate: about 6500 frames, 16 kb each. 104000 Kb in total. We store 44100 Kb of packed video. The compression ratio is 2,36.
  8. I wonder how you fit everything into 20 Mb! What is your secret? ;)

Free thumb goes for the achievement on the exotic platform, but good "remix" nevertheless. :)

@frog if BK0011 were full of full-motion animation like this, this would be not a demo. Meanwhile, it is.

This work is very impressive because of its platform's technical constraints. It also adds subtle creative touches to the old classic, making both the animation and the platform look surprisingly fresh. In other words, it's a demo.

Wow, this is quite an effort!
Always liked such 'shadow animations' and there are a lot of them. Technically it's very impressive too.

131 MB?
WTF.
srsly.

It seems impossible BK0011M to process such stream of data.

As I said before, the size of binary files is about 53 Mb. The rest space left free to allow people to use this HDD image with their own purpose (add other demos and games, for instance), because it's not quite easy to copy data from one HDD to another on this platform (actually, there is no any operating system that support 2 HDD simultaneously). The previous attempt to implement "Bad Apple" on this platform ended up with 78 Mb HDD image. So, please, read my comment above.

@Manwe: Thanks for the tech explanation. 72 cycles to move memory is indeed harsh. And I wasn't criticizing, just trying to understand. You did a good job with the graphics hardware arrangement.

You implied a few things in your reply though:

That's not what 8088 Domination is doing -- I didn't have that kind of bandwidth either. I had to write a delta-optimized x86 compiler for that prod; see https://trixter.oldskool.org/2014/06/19/8088-domination-post-mortem-part-1/ for the post-mortem. And I didn't have redefinable character cells either...

It's delta-compressed, that's how. It's 20MB uncompressed including music, 12MB .zipped.
