I watched the Vimeo video so can't judge how it runs in realtime. It's by no means a classic, but it's a nice little production with some effective ideas and very nice music.

I liked it. The music is great. The visuals are good for the most part, except the movement of the cube is a bit jerky in places. I wish the cube would do more, too... like maybe... float? :P

Looks good. Would be nice to get the executable though :)

I'm also a great fan of Peter Broderick's Float Album, nice feeling with the visuals... though, more of the floating particles (the ones from the screenshot) would have fitted better with the music.

Nice artistic sense and pretty cute little demo.
I don't understand why you can't release the binaries, you have already spread the music with the video ?!? (everybody can rip the music from the video...).
Thumb up overall

Good video, but no executable and commercial music.
added on the 2010-05-24 12:06:53 by raer raer
Hmm.. no binaries = no demo, and if I judge by the video it has OK visuals with a ripped tune. I think the cube is better fitted to techno if it's moving like this, the coloured squares were ok but seen many times before, the 'seaweed' effect was cool but needs something other than linear interpolation when it grows (it's like it's being pushed out of the ground by a machine instead of growing, because it stops instantly).

So, if you need a smooth track for your next production, just let me know! Then you can spread also the executable ;-)

1. ripped commercial music = lame, especially nowadays with the number of available musicians the demoscene has

2. you're not supposed to submit a demo here unless you spread the binaries

Maybe you could pick a cc-licensed, equally mellow track and make an alternative version? As it is, it's a "ghost demo"/wild demo without binaries and I think that's kinda unfortunate.

great atmosphere, great (commercial) music, great style - but where the hell are the binaries???
rulez added on the 2010-05-24 21:29:38 by Bobic Bobic
Dude. Seriously. Contact a demoscene musician. Get a track for this thing. Do a final with the new music and replace it here.

I like the visuals and the idea.
added on the 2010-05-24 21:47:01 by Raven^NCE Raven^NCE
binaries or not. I like the atmosphere and the visuals. Fits the music perfect. And commercial music .. well, sometimes an idea is growing up from just "that" particular song and you just need to let your creativity express itself.
rulez added on the 2010-05-24 21:58:17 by Happy-H Happy-H
maybe the demo was made _for_ that track in particular. you guys ever thought of that?

but no, demoscene unwritten rules clearly states: thy shalt only release thy demo containing sounds by other sceners badly cloning what you think fits. never the actual music you used to develop around.

this water is oil spill. not my definition of demoscene. not my definition of healthy creative harbour. this is pouet. :) good ridance.

rulez added on the 2010-05-24 22:18:11 by bdk bdk
I think not releasing a binary is a bigger "problem" than using a commercial track (and being honest about it...

Demo looked okay on the video but the cubes, ribbons and squares weren't that interesting, concept-wise. I also felt like the cube's rolling was a bit too abrupt for the ambient soundtrack... it seemed to create some tension within the otherwise mellow atmosphere of the show.

i mean, did you even try to explain the format of such release to the author or to the other person who didn't let you do that?

just can't get the situation when you can release the stuff on vimeo but can't pack it into the binaries.

sucks added on the 2010-05-25 04:33:50 by zoolum zoolum
ps: You completely miss the point; the same unwritten rules of the Demoscene also states that a demo is in the binary format accompanied with theoretically unlimited data. Wanna release a video? That's what wild / animation is for.

The point is, this clearly is not a demo as long as there are no binaries.

And releasing something with a commercial music against the will of the music's author is just sad.
added on the 2010-05-25 10:34:05 by decipher decipher
i feel i should mention i think the design of the visuals isn't bad at all, it's just the conditions of the actual release that are unfortunate. you should keep up and definitely come back, and definitely bring pie
ps: maybe we're pissed off because there's no demo available, just a video. Maybe we're rating it as a wild rather than a demo because it's just a video, and it's not very good as a wild. Maybe we are judging it as a demo, we like the tune (I do, I have a bunch of peter broderick's stuff) but we don't think this is even a good use of the tune. Ever thought of that? :)

With a demo like this you're going to get a split of opinion, some people will like the use of a tune like this, others will want hypnoglow and techno. But don't expect people to love a demo if you don't make it available.
added on the 2010-05-25 11:32:40 by psonice psonice
also, putting it on vimeo (millions of users) makes less sense than just releasing a binary (handful of demosceners, half of which cant be damned to check it out) when it comes to avoiding spreading an unlicensed/commercial tune on a large scale not to upset the original author. Next to that, at least it's not Vangelis :D

Nice visual ( since the cube's moves are a little bit jerky ) and nice music... to bad there's no binary available.

By the way, maybe you can replace the music by this one ( released 1987 ).... it it's author grants you ;-)

Nice ambience, reminds me of some sweet old Farbrausch intros. Thumbing it up and hoping for a decent OS X PPC build... {c'mooon, those sweet fr intros of old were running okay on a 400 MHz Celeron + Radeon7000 / 32 MB!}

Great music, good concept/visuals.
The cube animation is a little bit strange, too "fast" !?

The commercial music/nobinary thing sucks (a lot).

i'm not going to WASTE MY PRECIOUS TIME thumbing this down (i like the tune although the visuals aren't that fantastic), but seriously though, isn't this a violation against the previously mentioned actually written rule of pouet?
Well, there are several demos without binaries on pouet. This and the last moppi one just being the most visible examples.
