Fully free for now, sounds like on-demand demo watching will cost $10/year in future but parts will remain free.

It's a good app anyway, and dtv on iphone = instant win :)

Eh, how come it's listed as an artpack?! Surely demopack!
added on the 2010-01-06 12:22:44 by psonice psonice
yes
I don't know. It doesn't work over 3G (says it needs WiFi, while Youtube works fine over 3G) and it says it's free for just a while.
added on the 2010-01-06 12:47:50 by evil evil
apple restrict what you're allowed to do over 3g. Youtube works, but uses a lower bitrate over 3g to keep bandwidth down.

I guess it's possible for dtv too, but the current videos are good quality and it'd perhaps mean re-encoding everything.

Btw, how about an option to download videos for playback later when you're not on wifi? I did an app a while back that does that, it works pretty well (although it's not possible to watch the video while it downloads - you have to download then watch).

Well, things by Demoscene.TV have been released earlier, so I don't see anything wrong with it in this day and age, but if it turns into a paid version only, then it needs to go. Until that, I'm digging it :)
rulez added on the 2010-01-06 14:25:50 by gloom gloom
I don't see a problem (for now at least) too. It's effectively a massive demo pack. There's a whole bunch of those on here. And yeah, it's videos and not binaries, but so are all the demo dvds.

Havoc: there's no download for a lot of stuff these days, more of it is moving online. Stick to the oldschool stuff or quit whining :)

9,90 Euro/year for VOD funtionality for content that has not even been done by you but entirely by other ppl and entirely for free? You must be fucking kidding me.
sucks added on the 2010-01-06 16:23:40 by SiR SiR
If the money is spent on improving dtv or actually RUNNING it, what's the problem? You also didn't get PD/demo/... CDs/collections/whatever for free in the past, because you actually had to PAY for the physical media.
yes, IF.
9,90 Euro/year is expensive, and it is NOT for the app (which is quite good ofc) but mainly for the VOD functionality.
"DTV, you make it, you watch it...on your Iphone!" As long as you pay for it! No, thanks. This expensive fee along with the desperate cry for donations, coming hand in hand, to me does not look like just wanting to run DTV, it smells like scam to me, like ripping off.. and I wonder if I am the only one.

Yes, i totally agree with scamp, h2o and tobé. I know what dtv did for the scene for the last years. and these guys have my deepest respect for that. thank you. BUT if there is a non transparent way of making money with FREE ! content including MY content i created in my sparetime and not knowing what this money is used for i am going to inform dtv that my demos have to be removed from their servers. Apple on the other hand gives a SHIT bout my 1 year old iphone wich is broken and the warranty is exhausted now. the idea for your FREE app is great. I think there are other ways to get the money together like donations etc. keep it so or lose my content. greetings comicollie/nuance
sucks added on the 2010-01-07 18:15:13 by cosmicollie cosmicollie
It's exactly these kinds of comments that will make the people behind this app reconsider charging for it.

That said, I don't think it's expensive, but it is probablt too much just to cover bandwidth expenses (which is a legitimate thing to try to cover when dealing with streaming video).

i understand they need to pay for stuff. but somehow this is the wrong way to do it. i'd rather pay a $4 PayPal party live-stream fee, for each major party they broadcast live - or something.

that somehow seems a lot more sensible to me as the content they stream (interviews, analysis, etc) are largely THEIR OWN...bar the big-screen compo sections of course. ;)

Hey guys,

after doing some sports my mind is free again after a shitty day with the german telekom and a broken iphone.

Ok. Things are never as bad as they seem. We are all grown-up people and can talk about this in a calm way.

I dont think that the price for this application / the fee per year is high. I think its ok.
I would even pay a 50 bucks for it.

But, and this is the main point for me which gives me an unwell feeling:
I worked for several big TV shows and for some animated movies as a 3d and
gfx artist. But not I was the one who get the big money out of it but the businessmen inbetween.

I do gfx for a living as a artist and its really hard these days to get the right job
and most of all well payed. we all can experience this fact these days.

A lot of people come to me and say: "hey you are a good gfx artist - can you do
this or that for me ?" a tattoo, a airbrush concept for my car etc.
but if we come to talk about money theres the point where the separation between the weat from
the chaff begins. They want it mostly for free. I dont say i am the best gfx artist in the world. far from that. but they come to
me and like my work. so why shouldnt i get well-payed for my hard work ?

to get to the point:

If i´d be asked i´d like to do demos all day long. for a living. That would be my dreamjob.
no boundaries - no limits in taste, genre or message. just art !
The guys from dtv changed their hobby, their passion for the scene into their business.
But not with demos, art or content but with the publication of it.

Like all "businessmen" do these days.

My problem with all this is, that IF EVER a big sponsor or someone deeply interested in the scene comes up or "discovers" US, the scene
(NOT DTV) because of entering "itunesland" with this app to show the rest of the world what we are creating, what we are able to do, our skills, to show who we are. THEN i hope that the people who create demos like we do get a little peace of the cake and not only the people who are marketing it.

I am not thinking primarily about money. no. i am talking about respect, acceptance and recognition.

to get THE job, the gratification i am dreaming of.

Sorry, i simply had to many bad experiences with "businessmen" who are just using my stuff to make money from.

I made the experience that its often not the message or the meaning or the quality of something that counts but if something can be sold.
Remember bp2009 ? where we had high hopes on a BIG ! sponsor who let down the scene in the end for saving their own butts.
and bp was almost cancelled.

I dont want money for my demos/content. use it - share it - enjoy it - hate it - whatever.

BUT DTV: if IT happens (and i have high hopes in you - you guys are cool - good luck) that the scene suddenly
gets THAT splendid boost in publicity because of your app, that every coder every gfx or soundartist of us can really do
what he/she is made for - for a living. not creating shitty ringtones for mobile phones or crap thats sold as games for phones,
or content for stupid tv shows

THEN ! dtv don´t become like the sponsor we all know who let us down last year.

now is the time that we are supporting you. someday you can return the favour.
Because its not the app that will bring you there nor some businesskills or tactics but the content the scene is creating.

kind regards
Cosmic

gargaj: There is a huge difference between advertisting and pay-to-view-streams.

With ads, anyone is able to access the contect, which is copyrighted by their authors, for free - which pretty much is the intention of most releasing a demo. With pay-to-view-streams access to these goods is sold. Most demos don't come with a license attached that clearly state the usage limitations, but law (and moral) is: If it's not allowed by the author, you shouldn't assume commercial use is OK.

IMHO they'd need the OK from anyone whose demo they are showing, just like the mindcandys are asking for these OKs (because they sell access to demos).
scamp: then again they had google ads on their website for ages, so i dont see why one should make an issue out of it NOW.

added on the 2010-01-08 02:01:46 by kusma kusma
permission or not, demos are noncommercial products unless stated otherwise, juridically they'll get a tough time if they start to charge money for it and i hope some ppl will mutter cos this is NOT acceptable. let them suck more french cock to get their subsidaries and lazy ass about.. but not on my cash...

I would not be surprised when some1 writes that their demo may only spread as the full .rar package and may not be duplicated in any other way..

Or that Demoscene.tv doesnt have permission to put their demo on their website (thus it cant be streamed to iphone either)
rulez added on the 2010-01-08 07:46:30 by magic magic
Rtype : 1$ Per major party stream? How did you arrive at that figure? Let's say there are one thousand sceners watching the ASM stream - so 1000$, except these sceners are sat together in groups of 4 watching the stream. So now it's 250$. Or less - or more, depending on the spread, and on the total number of people wanting to access the stream, which may not even be as high as 1k.
added on the 2010-01-08 08:40:09 by farfar farfar
Actually, I think scamp is right - charging for VOD effectively means you're paying to watch a demo, and demoscene tv is making money from the work we did for free. Which is likely technically illegal.

Well, I know too that they lost funding, and providing these things doesn't cost zero. I've no problem with a paid element to the app (the base stuff should definitely be free though, it's good outreach).

Maybe a better idea would be to allow a few free videos per month, then charge for unlimited access. Or provide low quality videos after the first few, then charge. It's no different really, but it'd at least feel like we're paying for bandwidth etc. instead of content :)
added on the 2010-01-08 11:50:18 by psonice psonice
How about keeping the app free, and having a "donate" button somewhere in there? Micropayments in iphone apps make this insanely easy to everyone, and it would go a long way to act as a "fundraiser", if that's the idea... Basically you could do some extra stuff with the micropayments like neater menu interface (say 4 buttons.. bronze, silver, gold and platinum, priced at, say 1, 2, 5 and 10eur each?), once bought, change the UI to reflect that "level of commitment to keep DTV alive"...
added on the 2010-01-08 12:34:05 by uncle-x uncle-x
Did you need that? So, you will paying 2 X for your own stuff:

1/ Your Iphone + the app
2/ Your telecom provider monthly charge

Not so fair at all, imho.

I suggest to the DTV's to share incoming revenue between demos producers and write contract - Eazy to code and allow to distribute revenue directly to sceners or team. Could be an elegant alternative system (as the french sacem).

In my case, i make clear distinction between my work (video games) and my hobby (coding demos on my hype-free 20yrs old Atari STE). Please understand that's it's really important for me that everybody can download my demos (or videos captures) for free.
added on the 2010-01-08 13:37:40 by tobé tobé
What if they reverse their model - the app is free, with VOD, but there is a premium one that includes streaming of playlists and such? Does that even change anything?

IMHO, they need to keep the app fully free, forever. If they start charging, one or more of the rights-holders will send ONE email to Apple, and the app will be pulled. Yes, that is what is going to happen DTV, so think about your next move carefully.

I'm not so cynic that I think they created this app just to make money from it though. Also, Uncle-X has leading.
added on the 2010-01-08 13:42:29 by gloom gloom
taking money for the app is no problem as that would "pay for development of the iphone app". but paying for VOD is directly paying for watching the demos others have made for free. a totally different scenario.

I love the idea of the app, even though I don't have an iPhone myself. But the whole "pay for content", while the content isn't theirs to sell,is making this worth a massive thumb down.

Just fire the money sucking bastard of a paid DTV employee, and all financial problems are over.

The app is very nice.

Some of the comments on here are really stupid. You obviously pay them for providing the infrastructure and capability for streaming videos from the archive to the iphone. If you are able to do it for free, you simply don't buy their app.

Of course, it would be fair if they offered an opt-out option for people who feel their rights are being violated.

Could anyone please start to petition ISPs because they are making money by streaming our data? In fact, why do I have to pay for this post? Why do you agree to commercial sponsorship of demoparties? Because, in the end the company makes a profit from sponsoring, otherwise they would not do it.
