Very nice rendering, your engine rocks ;)

Nice flow and some very pretty scenes. Only two small downsides - the colours were a bit ropey in points and the running man looked a little demented.

Weird mix of 90s demo design and 3dmark clone, but the engine looks good and some of the content was good (definitely excluding that walk loop!) so thumb up.

Now get the design into the modern era and you'll go far :)

Well, honestly I have to say that this is just a flybye with some well modelled scenes and unspectacular music. There's no concept behind. At the end of 2007 this results in a slightly bored feeling for me. Nevertheless thumb up for the scenes and textures. Oh, and the scene with the (scrubby) animated guy reminds me on Alien 2 from Scoopex :-)

Piggie.
Fire that musician of yours, and get a graphician/designer/director.
The music has nothing to do with the visuals, it seems it's there just for the sake of being there.
The demo needs overlays to look like something.

Try again.

The French school of demomaking: Boring, pointless flyby. But fantastic for a first production (please have at least one idea or concept in your next one, okay) and some of the individual effects were nice (please make more of those and less of "I'm flying around somewhere with nothing to do).

Incredible slick and beatoful engine, really something to be proud of. But like others said, crappy design and no direction, and the soundtrack is abysmal!

The potential here is incredible though if you can take the construcive cricicsm given here.

Music was bad. But like comments above, you got something going here, and many of the parts were nice. So Thumbs up.
Btw, thoose blurry asteroids at the end made me dizzy and I felt abit sick, so that adds on to the thumb up :D

the scenes werent bad. missing some careful ambient lighting and such in some places, plus the bones animation was quite beta i guess.. but still a decent comeback.

I thought that the music was going to be really horrible after reading the comments but it's quite drum and bassy, almost jungle style, it wasn't that bad for me.

The models and textures are really good, overall I liked this a lot. One of the most promising first productions I've seen really.

Nice one , but for me a demo is not only camera movement + 3d objects

the demo is technically very good (heavy use of shaders , nice models and tex ) but have no real "spirit"
added on the 2007-11-10 13:12:07 by Tigrou Tigrou
why does everyone praise "the engine" like it's the best thing since sliced bread? I saw _nothing_ in this demo that was new (or goodlooking, for that matter), and i sure as hell saw nothing that gave it a good reason for running at 5 fps on a 2.3 ghz core2duo with 2 gb ram and a 8800 gts.

either the code was complete crap or you have severe driver issues.

the music was awful btw. sounded like the tutorial files that come with sony acid.

Hi everybody,
Thank you very much for the good feedback!
This demo is actually the 2nd demo from Coredumped, the first one
was a software rendering demo, but it was a long time ago, so it really is a new start.
I just added a video on this website www.vizerie3d.net, plus
there is a video on youtube (thanks to unknown contributor!).
About the music : It was composed before the demo, and not with the demo stuff in mind,
so it may explain why it could fit better. Hopefully the next one will not have these problems.
Most of the time was into engine coding, so it's why it may be a little weak on the design side, and it may explain the 'just a serie of scenes' effect, plus I needed to learn a lot modelling stuffs while doing it. It's kind of 'coder art', actually ;)

Yeah, THEY do indeed. I have to search really hard to find other demos with similar issues, so yeah, THEY do indeed have driver issues. ("driver issues" = "problems with drivers" btw)

Quote:

Nothing at all, just too bad that this demo didn't have any oldschool drum'n'bass. It had "Up-tempo Beat Template.ACD" music.

Quote:

Actually it doesn't. If you have the music _before_ you have the demo, then there is no reason what so ever why the visuals have no relevance to the music what so ever. A typical example of when the visuals are more important (to the demomakers) than the music, but no worries, it happens to everyone. :)

I'm looking forward to your next demo though - so keep them coming.

Never mind gloom, he obviously doesn't have any taste!
rulez added on the 2007-11-12 00:56:26 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
Well. Huge amount of work. I personally would consider investing less time in creating content and more time into polishing / syncing. Some things to start with:
- Never ever use ambient color (unless you know, what you are doing).
- Make lighting more suptile esp. with lense flares. (I know they are tempting :) )
- Vary the speed of your camera animations. Fast moving cameras will scenes make look small
- Do screenshots as eary as possible and then do overpaints / color variations in Photoshop until you are satisfied with your mockups. Only then start to reproduce your design goals in 3d. I doubt you will ever be able to develop a good color scheme in 3d. Probably get some references from flickr or deviant art and try to adapt their color schemes.

Your ingredients are good. Now keep on improving the mixture. (And don't listen to gloom. Although he *has* taste, he obviously does not how to motivate.)

rulez added on the 2007-11-12 16:34:29 by pixtur pixtur
gloom is right about his critique of the music. for "oldschool drum'n'bass" this is simply to monotoneous. for modern drum'n'bass this is too mellow and too slow - nowadays 185bpm are normal! also it's not wrong to use amen and funky drummer breaks at all - but just be more creative while doing it!
added on the 2007-11-12 17:17:32 by dipswitch dipswitch
pixtur: That is true, I'm no motivational speaker. :)

Guys - don't take it to mean that you suck, because you don't. It's just that after all the hugely positive comments I was expecting something a lot more polished (and you _do_ have driver issues :). If you want a soundtrack for your next demo, just let me know, okay?

While there is something strange with this demo that something is missing (maybe there are random scenes, no coherence) it's the visual quality that still make me thumb this up.
rulez added on the 2007-11-15 00:18:48 by Optimus Optimus
i agree with pixtur and gloom at the same time...

not a bad engine (although nothing that wasnt done several years ago), lots of work, but clearly no idea or concept behind the scenes and god the music was dull...

next time better i guess.

some coherent 3d and a solid engine. However, i think the days of demos "wanting to look like games" are over, as games nowadays are so polished and full of man-years of artwork that the demoscene has no chance to create anything which can compete with it. Why don't turn to more stylished or themed graphics? Or at least something more orignal than radioactive barrels inside alien factory facilities. Its soo seen before that it hurts. However, some nice (though severely overdone) shader usage and some entertainment value. Music would need a significant upgrade for next time. keep it up. And call gloom :)

stefan :
Thanks for all the advices ! I didn't know about the mockup technique, looks really helpful! About the ambient stuff I thought of using some indirect lighting. Maybe for the next one ?

gloom :
Well I don't know when we'll start a new demo. My brother was interested in doing the music for the next one, but a music done specifically for a demo this time!. Well I really can't tell for now.
About the framerate problems : do you have them with the interactive version ? Is rendering correct or buggy ? I'd really like to solve this problem, because I tested the engine carrefully on several GPU, so it annoys me a bit :/
I also thought that this may be a garbage collector problem because we're using lua and it is called every frame (on my computer it causes not too noticeable freezes from time to time, perhaps was it was you saw ?).
Well at least I learnt that using lua for something else than a event driven app is not a very good idea...

NeZbiE :
I was always a big fan of unreal-like sci-fi levels so there is clearly some influence from that!
I clearly agree that for a next demo we should concentrate on design instead :)

For a first attempt this is good and deserves a thumb. Dump the in-your-face lens flare and and tie the scenes together better.

I hope your next demo will be a little less like a flyby. From what I can tell you coded the demo and did the gfx. The gfx were good but it looks like too much work for one guy to model and texture all this stuff as well as coding the engine. Spend more time on coding effects and less time on building environments.

It's more impressive to model and render a matchbox so it looks photorealistic than it is to render a space station that looks CG. Keep it simple and cool.

one is not to confuse nico/mgd with nico/coredumped!

the running character made me fall of the chair because of laughing. :D

the demo runs somewhat choppy, i.e. with most adjacent frames taking very different time it seems, although the general framerate is not really bad.

otherwise, really nice. :D

nicovize: Then I think you should let your brother do the music. :) If he wants to chat about production tricks or whatever, just hollah.

Regarding the framerate issue: is there a log-writer option on the demo? I don't have the interactive version, but I could download it if it would help you to debug the demo. I don't have freezes or lag in framerates, I just have a consistent low framerate. You can email me at bent (attttttt) lorien , no if you want to chat about it.

..also; I would have to agree with Duckers - game-level-demos have been done to death. :)
