Normally I would put a screenshot too but I'm kindof afraid of a 9 hour loading time...
Again, this is typical SDS. Insanely detailed scenes with no fun-factor at all :(

They´re getting better every time, but it still looks like a SDS demo ;)

Smash Designs.

Those "dramatic" bits with the breakdown in the music and the first domino falling were particuarly hilarious :)

A thump up ffor all the work
but it about 5 minutes before the demo started at my P4, 3,2ghz x700 ati

After the butterfly his that car the screen went black and stayed black while the music continued..

Nice domino and greetings
those scene could have well been from a new pc game ;-)

Definitely not what I would enjoy.

We watched the compo over the stream and we kept asking wtf the loading time was for..

Other than that, this is yet another boring 3d demo, and I'm really starting to hate those, especially the ones that makes no sense, like this one clearly doesnt..

loading is a little bit too long... also on FX-55 system

but at all, very cool work...

domino effekt is very cool at all....

keep on doing nice work!!!!

everything's way too static, lighting is obviously not realtime and the dominos does not fit the chaos theory concept (which was presented again with butterflies, how creative).

This prod needs mainly three things:

+Decrease Loading time
main reason because nobody will put it on a demoshow or show it to anyone, I can't believe that I was able to wait that long.

+More cameras
U're not halcyon. Doing a single camera scene requires a lot of time working on the path of the camera. And only people like halcyon, nytrik do them in a way that entertains. However, it would be easier if you use different cameras syncronized with the music to show different parts, it also requires time to make everything work, but not that much time I think. It just makes everything boring and monotonous right now.

+Domino idea, wrong place
It's a cool idea, but I don't think it fits on that scenario, I enjoy a lot the shows on TV about that (not sure when do they do them now)...

So, I won't thumb down the prod because the amount of work, which looks like a lot to me, but it just need a little bit more to get a thumb up.

Solid Smash Designs quality - ok 3d models, huge loading times, 100% boring flyby crap.

sorry.
loading too long. (this is suck)
and some domino idea ain't good.
and boring flyby demo.

the loading time was horrible.. this is a demo? why need 15 hours of precalc? just use disk space.

some of the domino stuff was cool, albeit too repetitive. it clearly took alot of effort to build the scenes.
added on the 2006-08-13 18:04:36 by earx earx
I agree with Trace.

I like a lot of Smash Design demos, but this had too many faults.

I also got real bored with the dominoes after the 1st scene.
Unfortunately this prod is boring and too flybyish... Precalc is too long and at the end it doesn't quit but music loops and screen stays black. Just piggy for making an effort of creating 3d stuff.

The precalc took forever and by the time that this demo started I was going to thumb it down, it was useless even as an egg timer because I don't like my eggs hard boiled or even hatched ffs.

The I saw the demo, I still can't figure out why it took so long to precalculate but there was such an obviously high amount of work in this and the modelling is cool and I dig the dommino effect that I reluctantly have to thumb it up.

Jesus Christ on a bouncing glenz vector, why won't you guys stop making things mediocre?

The domino idea was remotely okay, but overall scenery, the lack of any decent lighting and direction on xanax made it look like a pretty fucked-up demo from the dawn of hardware 3d demos. Loading time was a joke, what the hell were you calculating anyway, the cure for AMIGA=CANCER?

it got a bit repetitive, personally i would have liked to see this realized with a physics engine, with a greater variation of stones.

No thumb down because of the amount of work. But just like many other Smash Designs demos this has no rewatching value at all, especially due to the insane loading time.

Incredibly lame precalc time. From what I remember, no 64k intro precalculations ever lasted that long on my pc and this one is a demo. If at least the demo was more than a boring flyby...

nystep: I fail to see any physics here. Delayed 90 degrees rotations of dominos around one axis are far from being physics.
added on the 2006-08-15 02:52:06 by keops keops
I liked it, and it rocked on the big screen.
Domino effect was a nice and new (?) idea.
rulez added on the 2006-08-15 23:42:11 by LiraNuna LiraNuna
- what the hell are you doing for 5minutes? If you're actually calculating collisions, why not use it for something real - like having the dominos fall from heights and stuff. Also, for a flyby, the camera-paths suck! Oh, and you really should do split-screen when the dominios fork :)

Very pretty. Loads of work. I was bored in the middle so shorter would have been better for me, but overall I thought this was a hell of a lot better than the current pouet rating would indicate. Thanks.
rulez added on the 2006-08-16 11:44:32 by wroceng wroceng
there is the collision detection, and this would require a good partitioning routine to run realtime considering the number of dominos, unless it's done during loading as hornet said..

all in all, if your point gargaj was to flame me, you should say "fuck you nystep" straight away, this way it'll be clear and it'll enable you to be respectful towards their work...
added on the 2006-08-16 13:29:44 by nystep nystep
Nystep: this kind of basic domino thing can be done without any collision at all. The final angle formed by a fallen domino and the floor plane is more or less always the same. Each one only needs a delay/timeindex to initiate its rotation sequence, a simple float which can be stored along with the former position and orientation of each domino...
added on the 2006-08-16 13:38:21 by keops keops
keops, this sounds like a good idea to do it, but you discard the collision detection excuse for the loading time.. ;) where does it comes from then?
added on the 2006-08-16 13:53:37 by nystep nystep
My intention wasn't to flame, I'm merely doubting there's any phyiscs code involved - see Keops' explanation.
added on the 2006-08-16 13:56:46 by Gargaj Gargaj
according to tobi, the dominoes (sp?) are keyframed, and the long loading time is due to a bug in the scenefile loader.
added on the 2006-08-16 13:57:07 by ryg ryg
Well the dominos movement could be calculated realtime with a shader... :D
added on the 2006-08-16 13:57:11 by xernobyl xernobyl
ok i guess that ryg has brought the final point to the pure technical discution (: thanks :) .

on my side i feel sorry and i didn't want to flame either gargaj. maybe there's something about the way i write post that makes it irritating for others, i'll try to take care of that in the future, because i don't want to look like an irritating moron and it's not even the way i am..
so, what about going for a beer at the next party? :)

The idea with the dominos displaying credits and pictures was GREAT!!! Finally a good use for dominos in demos!

Pitty about the big loading time..
rulez added on the 2006-08-22 12:38:04 by Optimus Optimus
Phew, that loading time was the longest I've ever seen. I only waited because it was from Smash Designs.

The music is great, as usual. And the scenery at the beginning looks great, too. But the rest of the demo doesn't really appeal to me. I really like YAB3DFD and stuff, but this one was a bit lengthy...

One good effect: The greetings part. The rest of the domino effect I could have done without, thank you.

The music is above average. Nice and cozy.

The precalc has been mentioned, but I'd like to mention it again: WTF are you doing?????????
okay, some unrealistic domino effects, but very nice grafix (although they are a bit choppy on my gf4 ^^) and nice music! I like the beginning very much!
