Ok here it is. The "slow" loading means that your gfx card is doing a PRT computation (precomputed radiance transfer) and that is billions of operations. In the paper of P.P.Sloan "Fast,Arbitrary BRDF Shading for low-frequnecy lighting using spherical harmonics" they were using raytracing for PRT and it took them several hours to calculate it for 40K triangle mesh.
We're using simpler scanline method with different distribution of samples over sphere.
Well see it :).
nVidia users will have to wait till 13.10.2004 for their version (be patient). Divx version will be available sooner. Cheers to xenusion for his fast and brilliant help on this production!

Oh Yes, this is of course 16s demo competition entry. Maybe this kind of compo will be more popular in the future? Still there is not enough productions of this kind to make a separate pouet group "16s demo"...

Looks pretty nice, but that poor man could really use a penis.

Really gorgeous rendering, but 16 seconds is just too short. Yes, this was part of the compo rules, and it's true I find many demos too long, but this is just the other end of the extreme. I can't imagine this sort of production catching on.

All the same, this is some pretty eye-candy.
people - if it's not a in the "traditional" demo-compo, don't enter a ranking at pouet.

bah... the return of vendor specific opengl extensions! Well, i'll wait for an nvidia version...

it had to deal with the rules so if you want blame anyone go and contact the abstract orgas.

Finally someone using PRT in the demoscene.

But I'd like to run this on my nvidia card. Vendor specific opengl extensions suck. (Please use D3D the next time, ok?)

Anyways,. all 16 secs were cool ;)

how about stuffing the 16s-stuff in the misctro-category?

@Duckers: Works perfectly on my radeon9800pro. I believe I've got the latest driver.

By the way, is this really the first demo featuring PRT-shading?

nice objects.. boring texture. all-in-all the demo does not appeal at all tho. piggie. Oh, ran on my r9800 pro as well ;P

This sucks :)

Maybe it's one of the few using the stuff as described by Peter-Pike 'sneakers' Sloan yes, but what good does it do? :)
added on the 2004-10-11 19:58:07 by superplek superplek
duckers and buzzie: tell me your system specs (driver and system)
hyde: it is not the first demo showing spherical harmonics lighting but I think first that actually computes PRT on the card.
dear plek: and what good do You do? :)

As for the usage - I think the only one that I can think up in this moment is just 64k intros...

because ... memory is cheap and You just get the second DVD for your game with all PRT on it :)

OK the divx version is available on our web page.

aight.. looks like a trailer again. :) THIS SUMMER ! ROMANCE! DESIRE!!.. WHAAHH BOOM!!.. ONE MAN.. and so on.. great to see some new routines too even though I dont really know what this PRT is about.. it sounds like the noise before it starts smelling funny though.. Is that it?
rulez added on the 2004-10-11 23:34:37 by loaderror loaderror
I think loaderror has seen too much Pablo Francisco, and for those of you who complain about an nvidia release.. read the readme.

Anyway, it looks nice. short, but nice.

Short, but VERY nice looking, especially the first scene is gorgeous.
rulez added on the 2004-10-12 13:09:26 by Sdw Sdw
It looks good, but I don't like the idea of demos where the loading time is longer than the demo itself.
added on the 2004-10-12 13:16:23 by asasel asasel
looks really nice, the models are great. But its just too damn short! Still waiting for the nv version so i can view it properly before voting :)

set the video-link

Great demo for a 16s demo compo, the loading time was (here) longer than the demo itself but it was worth it. ;)

REALLY nice looking graphics... but hey, it's Plastic, i got used to that.
and no ripped music this time! :D

Wtf? 16s demo compo. What kind of kinky torture is that? Anyways this is nice piece to have. Make a sequal next with additional 16 seconds, thank you!

Looks great, just like all other Plastic demos =)

But 16s really is torture =(((

Release an extended version =P

Hello, I must do a little delay with nVidia version. It's because GeForce5 actually does not support floating point buffers! I found that GeForce FX 5200 has no floating point pixel formats. And geForce6 support event ATI's floating point specification (It seems that ARB extension will be based on ATI's floating point extensions). So I must fix a little geForce6 version, and precalculate PRT on ATI card, store it and then use in geForce5 version. Give me just one more day :)
added on the 2004-10-14 10:00:35 by bonzaj bonzaj
more load time than demo. make a "remix" (i.e. a normal-length version) please :)
added on the 2004-10-14 10:19:24 by Shifter Shifter
Why not make the looping mode loop seamlessly, without pauses? And tell me, I am not a coder, what benefits this spherical blaa blaa lighting has?
added on the 2004-10-14 11:37:36 by asasel asasel
OK here it is The current version runs on ATI cards and GeForceFX6 cards. I've also found a bug that may be responsible for crushing on duckers machine. Well for geForceFX5 card owners and those who don't like the slow preprocessing stage there is a special version on our site with already precomputed coefficients. I'm in a hurry now so If any of You guys have a little time please make a link with my page to that file using "disk 5" downloading option. Thanks And bye!

asasel: quickly saying it is a realtime radiosity method for static scenes and dynamic lighting that is positioned on a distant sphere.

Cheers!

(video comment)
i see nothing here wich need a greatest card than a GF4 (without pixel shaders and good openGL drivers, with some ideas and a little bit of good cheating).
why nothing moves except the light?
where is the technical interest here ? (there is no art interest for me, because nothing moves and it's too short to be enjoyed)
sucks added on the 2004-10-20 10:32:09 by Zone (leZone) Zone (leZone)
Was very slow... probably shitty geforce fx ps2 performance issues. Models are great tho, and the music is good. Plus it at least loops :)
rulez added on the 2004-10-20 15:52:57 by psonice psonice
Zone: Please switch to 486-based demos. ;)
Why should they write demos (useless programs) for old hardware which probably no one in the group has? It run on the _compo machine_, it is not longer than 16 seconds (if you don't count the loader part), ... no need of bitching here. ;)

Btw loader time... I've recently watched fr-013: flybye again - I couldn't enjoy the loader music because the loader was too fast (on actuall hardware).
Can't see it on my hardware (next year, possibly), but what's the point in realtime radiosity when the whole scene is basically green? (as seen in the screenshot, that is). Soft shadows can be faked in other ways without shaders, so I guess they are not the main reason.

dixan: radiosity has more uses than just colour bleed :) Although with just 16 seconds, its hard to see a lot of difference i must say.

but please give Farbrausch back their patented loading bar! and that so-called man his penis!

This is beautiful and I like the use of some sort of "experimental" lightning system, or something like that. A rulez for the tech side of the demo, would be piggy otherwise I think because although these 16 are beautiful seconds, these are still only 16 seconds ;-)
rulez added on the 2005-08-12 11:42:01 by {OdS} {OdS}
If you only have two scenes to show, it would be nice to have an interactive version, so we can view to model in more detail.

I understand this is intensive but is it supposed to take 10+ minutes to load on my 8800GTX\E8400\4GB DDR2 PC-9600? It doesn't seem to be hanging just taking a very long time to load. Still haven't gotten it to start. Hmmm... Any suggestions besides driver updates which are all the latest? I am using Vista 64 could this be the issue?

I'll give it a thumbs up for all the effort, hard work, taking chances and use of new technology since there are no non-votes allowed at Pouet.

Great models and beautiful overall, but if you make a demo so short, I think shouldn't be so ambient.
