some tunes are nice, some tunes are mediocre... the interface is good but some more screen action (e.g. falling leaves or raindrops) would be more beautiful... anyway thumb up

First of all, IMO the picture and its variations is/are absolutely gorgeous. Big respect to Skuter for the tunes... some of them are absolutely sweet even though a lot of them are most suitable as "background music" with melodies that don't particularly stand out. However, the mood of the songs so perfectly fits the subject/season that this production deserves a thumb up. Plus, I hope that we'll hear more from Skuter. Good job, folks! Oh and I miss silly scrolltexts. ;)

and yes its a pure copy of our msxdisk...not very inovative to just copy a concept.
nice ripoff... we did it better!

ye comon honeypie, would you please be man enough to admit it?
"we"?
what "we"?
the only person who should complain is blz and he doesn't.

besides i think the musicdisks are comparable in quality so stop being razor.
rulez added on the 2005-12-23 00:02:58 by Gargaj Gargaj
dubmood, let's face it - tunes in the whole whispers are just average, based on the same (low quality, ugly sounding) samples. look at the filesizes here. can anyone here put more in just few kilobytes? naah, even radix isn't able to. so why "whispers" is so "great"? because was released under razor1911 label? this is not enough reason.
added on the 2005-12-23 12:12:49 by F7sus4 F7sus4
i just talked with blz about similarity within both chip-disks. he said that his standpoint is neutral and "autumn leaf" resembles a little to "whispers", but the concept is different and it does not really matter to him.
added on the 2005-12-23 14:32:43 by F7sus4 F7sus4
hah! your lack of selfcriticism takes this dispute to a whole new level! The only songs that are above avarage in the disk is the ones where you didnt try to limit the filesize. Seems like you missed a whole lot about making tiny XMs, none of your "tiny songs" had anything special, neither in music or from a technical perspective. and whats this talk about radix? check out tiny tunes by composers like reed, josss etc and you will find out that you have a whole lot to learn about making music in a limited filesize.

you cant diss blzs music from whispers, and dont forget when it was released, you now did the exact same thing 3 years later (and still werent able to fix the bugs we had in our disk)
the songs of yours wich are actually good are the big ones. and if all the simularities with whispers werent enough you just had to add that endscreen did you? this is a complete concept ripoff, and it has nothing to do with razor 1911. whispers still stand the test of time, but is it really that much of a accomplishment to "make it better" 3 years later? just give blz, bp & mime the credit and let go of it.
dubmood, there's no sense to credit blz for my music, mime for diodak's graphics, and blackpanther for pienia's code. are you out of mind? and why didn't you listen to those tunes carefully? please, show me a chiptune with better arrangement than "falling leaves" in 4860 bytes or than "autumn rain" in just 1500 bytes (!). search the whole scene - reed, loonie tunes - i promise, you won't find. synthethic crap - that's all you might find. "the quality is not always going together with fame".
added on the 2005-12-23 15:00:26 by F7sus4 F7sus4
you should credit them for the concept that you ripped. and no I dont see, after listening through your songs, whats so special about them that you can claim to be the best and most original of the whole demoscene. the big ones are ok and some even very good, but no, you cant just claim to be the best. get a grip
i didn't said that my tunes are the best on the whole demoscene, but - as a musician - i expected more objective opinion, not only nicknames. i find your opinion unjust, but ofcourse you might have your own judgement. it seems that mime has monopoly for melancholic landscape graphic motives...
added on the 2005-12-23 15:31:08 by F7sus4 F7sus4
for the interface, the one of whisper was really better (animated thing, more clickable things...), just a picture for a musicdisk is poor. for the music.. well it seems maybe nice but i'm not fan of this music :)
so i go for a pig.
added on the 2005-12-23 15:45:38 by skarab skarab
the concept is this is not far from 'whispers'. while whispers go through the seasons of the year and let each tune represent a month, this disk changes the same picture from morning to night (in a pretty neat way, too).. the tunes are very skillfully tracked in a technical point of view but most of them don't really appeal to me musically.
skuter claims this to be superior to whispers but i disagree. the concept is almost the same, but the different parts (gfx, music, concept) don't fit together all as well which was one of the great things with whispers.. the endscreen with the man on the bench reveals that this was probably not at all a fresh idea.. if it was i wouln't have to compare.

i didnt want to take part in all the discussion about this musicdisk and its similarity to "whispers", coz you know , what for?
but few facts changed my point of view and i have to write few things.

so today skuter came to me asking to write a comment on pouet that he didnt rip off the idea. so i checked the stuff, and i decided to keep my opinion for myself. for an hour i had to defend my decision to stay out of this.then skuter said ok, so just give me your opinions in private. so i told him what i think.then again i had to face the lack of will to understand that i dont want to get involved.
then i heard "ok, so i will write it", i asked before and asked once again to not use my opinion in this fight, in return i got - you had your chance so i will write it. so again i nicely asked for this conversation to stay beetwen our two, coz i dont want be a part of it , and i dont really care.well, looks like i had nothing to say in this matter.

apart from that, he wrote something that is not completely correct
Quote:
i just talked with blz about similarity within both chip-disks. he said that his standpoint is neutral and "autumn leaf" resembles a little to "whispers", but the concept is different and it does not really matter to him.

actually i said that the concept is just a little different. its a big difference, but i understand that skuters version suit him better.

i dont care if skuter wanted to make something alike wispers or not, i dont care and its not my problem. you did it ,you defend it if you have problem with critics.
but please dont use my person as a shield when i dont want that, and dont use my opinions, dont change my words, and show some respect to the others who dont think like you do.
and most important show some respect to the fact that when some1s asking for something to stay behind the door(numerous times) he actually mean that. if i would like to take part in this discussion i would do that by myself.

some will like this, some will like whispers better.
let ppl judge the prod on their own.
arrogance is not a true virtue.

i gues you achive your point, you've forced me to write a comment, but thats it.
now leave me alone i have a life to live.

blz, it seems that now you have your own version about it. pity that it won't be good solution to put an original polish quotes here. i have translated your relation correctly, i don't care if you changed your mind, but you should have mention that. that's all... there's no offense from myself and i didn't wanted to "use you as a shield". i just thought that your person would be the best one to comment the whole situation out.

best regards,

Few words:
I know both chipdisks and have listened to them for a few times. In my honest opinion, if someone really MUST pick on something, then ending screen may look similarly to "Whispers" winter season picture, but calling the whole production a "rip" is some kind of psychosis. Marsmellow did the code, graphics and music work themself. Just calm down and don't be rude. They really did a great job!

Code:
Good. The only bugs I have found: Sometimes before the tune switches to next one, the first second of current tune is played once again. That's irritating a bit. Another: Buttons. When you move mousepointer quickly out of the screen they sometimes stay lighted. It mainly concerns "Loop" switch. The rest works well.

GFX:
Good planned, moody and interesting. It fulfills the tunes climate, but each screen might have been different. Colors are well matched.

MSX:
I like most of the tunes, they fit to the chipdisk's title. "The Notebook" and "In your arms" are my favourites. However, some of them are not in my personal taste of music (e.g. Farewell tears, Monotony collage). Comparing to filesize, the quality and performance is amazing and paragon. Every little sound is good balanced.

In general:
Nice chipdisk for listening in the background with well done graphics and nostalgic music. Good production.

this seems to be quite a heated discussion... and while I can't really judge the whole ripoff-issue since I haven't seen "Whispers" yet, I'm not gonna comment on that. However, I just remember that on the Amiga there were a lot similarly-themed musicdisks too and no one really made a big fuzz about it. What matters the most to me is that the compositions are original, which they apparently are, so what's the big deal? The fact that it's a season? There already was Spring Melodies on the Amiga, so it could be a ripoff of that too, no? ;) just kidding...

I do think though that Skuter deserves respect for the music he composed... while at the same time he should respect the others. It works both ways. Like I've said before, I think the songs fit the topic of the musicdisk very well. They aren't the best songs I've ever heard, but they're very nice.

The technical achievement of cramming as much as possible into a few bytes isn't something that means a lot to me though. It may be a great achievement, but it doesn't make a song better to me if it only uses 1kb. I only judge music by what it is.... music. Personally speaking, I'd like to see what Skuter can do outside of the chiptune-limitations. Go for it, mate! :)
added on the 2005-12-29 16:46:00 by Axel Axel
ok, I've checked out "Whispers" in the meantime... and while it's very similar in style, my opinion is that it can't be called a ripoff in any way.... because it leads to the question:

is no one allowed to make productions that are stylistically similar?

I mean, of course it's great to be the first to have unique idea but hey, gimme a break... if a musicdisk is judged by the graphics/style alone, then we're on the wrong track, no?
added on the 2005-12-29 21:02:29 by Axel Axel
This is just great! Great tunes indeed!
I´m a little jealous actually! =0P
How is it possible to get such a great sound out of a few kilobytes? I would be happy to have such skills! Be warned I'll rip off your samples if I need some cool chips sounds! =O)
Just kidding!
Your composing skill is also awesome skuter!
"In your arms" ,although short, is my favourite tune of the disc.

The gfx are nice ,too. And the cool changes between night and day are...well...cool! =)

And not to forget the coder who had the ungrateful job to code this. I mean its a music disc and you didn't get much feedback on the coding ,I can imagine! =oP

The only thing I miss is some action on the interface. Like flowing water ,flying birds and falling leaves ,shimmering stars in the night. With this included "Autumn Leaf" would be even more the cracker it already is!
THis will run for a long time on my PC!
Thanks guys!
Provided enough glöps (which I have not) ,this would be my "Coup de coeur"!

I 'd like to add my personal opinion about the "rip off" discussion here as well. (Did that already in the "Whispers"-Comments):

I would say it this way: Marsmellow took a piece from the "Whispers-tart" and put their own candy decoration on it.
(Razor1911 musically simulates a hole year while Marsmellow just covers one autumn day)
I think you guys don´t have to worry about not being credited!
Your musicdisc is great and it is below your skill-level to discuss matters of crediting.
It's common that good ideas are copied or
developed further or changed!
Just look how many diffrent cars or handys are on the market ,they all share the basic idea but differ in many ways.
And no one credits Carl Benz or Gottlieb Daimler (Dunno who invented the mobile phone) today! =0P

But that doesn't change anything. I like still like it the same as after I listened to "Whispers".
To say what is better "whispers" or "Autumn Leaf" depends on personal taste.
I like both the same.
(Although whispers has the plus of more action on the screen while autumn leaf has 5 more tunes (dunno if the playtime is longer though)
Thank you all!

Case 3? Ok, that's your self-opinion. I just disagree. Personally, I prefer "Autumn Leaf" more and (as a musician) I think that its tunes are composed damn better. Skuter's sample-sets are marvellous, while "Whispers" uses the same (and ugly ones) in every tune. "Autumn Leaf" tunes have been composed for last 2-3 years, independently of "Whispers" (look at the dates), so their performance is carefully thought out and well-considered. It look that Razor's has to learn something from guys at Marsmellow. Being more famous does NOT mean to be the best, and those productions are good examples.

Dear Razors,

Word spread that you are a bit nervous.
But such shit really corrupts the scene.
I ain't no pretending to be quietist.
But this music disk is good enough.
There are no evidence that Autumn Leaf could be using a Whispers idea
Simply marsmellow guys had this in mind and they are not only ones.
Autumn is yet another theme which is used to put on run some depressive tunes.
Oh, yeah! I see that some guys are quite edgy here about what is going on.
Can I mess in with some advice? Calm down and stop being bustas.
It's under the honor of the scene to quarrel. If guys did it as a ripoff
then they know it themselves - they were conscious while doing that.
No one owns monopoly on either mans-sitting-on-a-bench...
Let it go! Some guys might be doing a little bit of drinking if they say these
tunes good: Forgotten City, Faerie whatzit? -But some are not bad either, as Loneliness + The Notebook and Dom kicks ass.
And who wants some action on the screen? What - falling leaves. Smells like you are really determined to claim
this as Whispers copy. You should not.
Ok, it could be easier to read and less boring if I did not write a tabloid article for this, no?

- Yellow Windows cursor sux. This one serious. Could use this leaf icon instead. =)
- Some tunes are really shitty. (Oops, forgive me, opinion.)
- Guys failed a bit with putting that sitting-on-a-park-bench man at the fadeout.
At a first glance even I became a bit "unstable".
- Bad product packing*.
- Tunes switch with an annoying noise in some cases. And it's not BASS fault.

+ Some tunes are really good.
+ Friendly behaviour - tunes are available without sneaking into Temp or wherever
they could be.
+ Easy Street EPS font kicks ass. My bad, I even "ripped" it.
+ I'd like to put such autumn painting on the wall in my room =).
I made only one shitty SE theme with it right now. My bad, I did it ["ripping"] again.
+ So many comments here [long and unfriendly, though].

Maybe some guys have signed a deal to make marsmellow famous with that?

{ You know, I can play this game, too.
I really think that there is hidden context menu here.
And a secret image also! And no way that this one does not look for system time
to know which tune to play! =) }

* For bad packing - man, I can't stand that people make demo or mostly music disk
and do not even bother to put all files together in one piece of exe. Yeah, I said
something about friendly behaviour previously - the tunes are ready to play at any time without launching the app, but - have I made a mistake - this is not a common
thing (is it?) so for those who really need them may export them with some kind of command.
The shit is that I must make a separate folder for each of musicdisks I have.
For example, Technicks musicdisk would not cope with this one as it needs that obsolete original version. And it is not the only one; People, please remove version check =). And what is that funky king-size Intel JPEG lib? And, guys, what is the point to save up 100kb using UPX then if it will be zipped anyway? Just a lamer advice. Yet I'd like to put two minuses here, but I am keeping +/- ratio 1:1.

Ok, that's all...

Run-Time Error 666 at address FACE:2ACE: Comment too long.

P.S. For Razor $777 only: put out some new releases yourself.
It is not really a blame, but I am still quite edgy about Sleepless, though.

just few reflections at the end:

the first person who used seasons for his compositions background was antonio vivaldi.
did you credit him, razors? no.

the second person who used that idea to create his own scene production was phantom on c64 (1992).
did you credit him, razors? no.

so why the hell do you force skuter to credit you for "idea" which in fact isn't solely yours? you weren't first (and so absolutely original) who put together months and other tunes. shame.

btw, guys at marsmellow didn't even compose their ideas into months, but an autumn day... and that's great "rip". (?!)

once again - great music-disk, marsmellow. keep on with chipping!

Reading whilst listening to this music...
I am a little surprised by those "rip"-like arguments...

Non-Polish out there surely do not recognize some very famous PL tv themes as "Janosik" or "Dom". So if somebody is writing about scene music ripping, he is just not correct.

In addition Autumn has an important role in Poland, afaIk. Colours, atmosphere, romantism... I would not be surprised if in a couple of years there will be a new "autumn" production from that country... Would it be a ripping, than? Gosh...

Another thing.
Back in the days when there were good'n'stylish prods, even if it has one or another style, ppl were happy and had fun to listen to/to watch/to had nice time with. Now (or at least from a copule of years) it is different. I see more "human humanum lupus" behaviour. Sad... Really sad.

If it took an inspiration from a certain chipdisk, so maybe that certain chipdisk was partly inspired by 4 season Vivaldi's concept, or feeleings, or life?...

I do not care! I like art and that's why I like that piece of 0s and 1s. And if you care, why do not you patent pend your productions if you are not so kind to welcome something nice, good and new?

Download it, if you have not yet and listen to it. It is a nice prod!

Some quality tunes here! my favs are "among the clouds", "lightbeam", "day and night", and "Ebony owl netsuke". (and thanks for including the .xm files!)

the flamewar behind this is indeed lame, though :/

My favorite chipdisk of all times! Unbeatable quality compared to modules' filesize! Respect!
