ehhh. a static (ugly) fractal and microsoft sam? this is, even if one would take the size into account, damn sloppy.

I THOUGHT IT WAS REAL SPEECH SYNTHESIZER IN 256 bytez :((( (not)

skrebbel: How can you remain unsensitive to the "beauty" of extreme size optimization prods ?
rulez added on the 2004-10-03 18:28:02 by p01 p01
P01: 'cause it's boring!
I enjoy 256b prods since years and nobody told they are boring so far. Damn! I've been tricked since years. U__U

to make Mc Sam talk in 256 bytes is a real freak

VIDEO PLEASE. not a joke.
some lowres xvid would do.

I think there's someone who doesn't know what they are thumbing down. This small binary is a masterpiece, because of one thing: Windows emulates .COM files, and it is impossible to call the voice synthesizer (or whatever you call it). Therefore, to do this, Peci took a long time to search for a solution, and finally, he found a bug in the windows XP emulator that allowed him to do this. When you think about that, it's a fucking brilliant piece of work.

crashes.. can't watch it.. sorry..

yes, this one is masterpiece. Whoever doesn't agree should try to make an unpacked windows executable smaller than 2k, or notice that a regular PE header is greater than 256 bytes.

had I not seen this being born with my own eyes, I'd not believe it :D fucking brilliant

rulez!!!
great "world's first" hack here :)

@hhc: you can make an unpacked win exe in much less than 2k - there are even some 1k "intros" on pouet

I'm left speechless because I'm running Win2k. But because I saw this on a real XP, I'm left speechless as well.

P01: tiny prods are a showcase of lameness and laziness. *real* able sizecoders can do more than sizeoptimizing one puny little 1993-style fractal effect. i can often be totally blown away by people doing the apparently impossible in so few bytes. try mainloop&tbc's asm 4k for a hint. yes, that's 16 times bigger, i know.

32 byte ids for calling com object
32 byte text (including dll name)
code for loading dll, calling functions
trick to produce the win32 callback from an old 16bit com file
50bytes code for mandelbrot fractal.

everyone who say its just a call - do it in 16 bit.

frying. not fyring. damn.

o__O respecting 4kb intros authors is not incompatible with respecting authors of smaller intros. And the size limit is not a brake to creativity, technique or design : see 3D BLOB by MZ1453 / gunnars farvebio (gfb), CITY by MZ1453 / gunnars farvebio (gfb), Jézus Szíve Okozza a Napkitörést by Alvaro Acwellan / MoleCoola, ...

Note to self: I'm sure I'm wasting my time on this. Anyhow I'll have made my day if it could help others discover some brilliant prods.
added on the 2004-10-04 14:18:59 by p01 p01
it's impressive to some extent, but most (if not all) 256 bytes and 1k 'intros' are shitboring to watch. I can understand skreb's argument, compile a bunch of effects and make a decent 4k instead.

But i will never thumb down something technicly impressive and this is probably coder candy anyway :)

P01, "Some colorful 3d metaballs on a gray X AND Y pattern"

COME ON! A GRAY X AND Y PATTERN! PUH-LEASE!
added on the 2004-10-04 15:50:19 by skrebbel skrebbel
skrebbel, can you understand this 256b is not about gfx or something, its about doing impossible - calling win32 api from 16-bit emulated process. ( not a process actually ).
and that all in 256b. can you fuckin uderstand it ? IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. but it was done in 256 bytes.

please, anybody...

nerall, i'd like to repeat the following to you:

"look mum, i'm ironing a shirt with a frying pan!"
added on the 2004-10-04 20:54:47 by skrebbel skrebbel
YES!
rulez added on the 2004-10-05 11:07:29 by AbcuG! AbcuG!
if you need your shirt to be ironed and the only thing you have is a frying pan than it is a creative solution to use it if it works. - just using what you have is better than not using it.
added on the 2004-10-05 11:19:16 by peci peci
skrebbel: the point is that peci managed to iron the shirt with the frying pan perfectly - it's stupid but consider it a stunt. :)

i wanna see/hear.. plz! (XP-SP2, but doesn't work here)
added on the 2004-10-05 12:41:26 by toxie toxie
I guess you'd have to be a coder to appreciate this kind of bullshit..
Fuck making demos to impress everyone, make fucking demos for your own fucking reasons. Skrebbel knows this and does it himself anyway.
doesn't work here either (xp, sp2)

On the sheet of scx255 on 256b.com, peci inivited the people having troubles to get the intro working on their system ( provided that's it's WinXP ) to get in touch with him and send your ole32.dll and ntvdm.exe to get the correct ordinals.
added on the 2004-10-06 16:16:08 by p01 p01
kbab, why are you bitching, did you ever wrote an instruction? what kind of lameness and laziness are you talking about? making this stuff is far more sophisticated that coding in Java, you know :)

damn great
rulez added on the 2004-11-03 20:16:06 by NuKem NuKem
man, hacking sometimes simply gets to the point they become just stupid. well that point is waaaay before this... :)
kudos to peci for being such a fanatic!! :)

reminds me about how i debugged some semi-dos stuff trying to find out if some of the not-that-well documented stuff (e.g., triggering an invalid opcode in order to invoke certain vm host functions) could be used for improving the ntvdm box...
